A measure of information conveyed by the occurrence of an event of definite probability; in mathematical notation, the measure I(xi) for the event xi is expressed as the logarithm of the reciprocal of the probability p(xi) that the particular event will occur, i.e., I(xi)=log1p(xi)=-logp(xi).
