A modem chip can be used to develop full-duplex, half-duplex, simplex, automatic answer, automatic disconnect, answer only, or answer/originate configuration. All that is required for a complete unit that can perform all supervisory functions, including handshaking routines, is an input filter, output buffer, and threshold amplifier.
