Capable of assuming three different physical states. The term is commonly applied to an interface device in a microprocessor system that makes a connection to a multipurpose bus. Such a device can send and receive 1-bits and 0-bits and, when inactive, assume a high-impedance state that disconnects it from the bus (while transfers are taking place between other devices).
