random access memory (RAM)

1. A memory chip used with processors, information can be both read from, and written into the memory but the contents are lost when the power supply is removed.

2. Any form of storage in which the access time for any item of data is in dependent of the location of the data most recently obtained, e.g. immediate access store has a random access capability but magnetic disk does not.
